Benefits of Competing

Competition is a wonderful experience for students of all ages and all belt ranks. We highly encourage all students to take advantage of participating in tournaments we attend. Here's a few of the many benefits of competing:

  • Shows a different aspect of Taekwondo

  • Meet friends from other schools

  • See that Taekwondo is larger than just our dojang

  • Build confidence by performing in front of a large crowd

  • Trophy/medals are cool and rewarding to earn

  • Thrill of competition

  • Sense of community within USTA - everyone helps each other warmup, kick out, practice forms

  • Support system - peers cheer you on

  • Shows you what areas you can improve on, especially if you lose

STUDENT INTERVIEWS

Brandon Santiago (14 years old)

started TKD at age 6

first competition at age 7 (orange belt)

"I've gone to so many tournaments, I can't even remember how many. I still get nervous with each sparring match, but I love the thrill of competing. I strive to get better. To calm my nerves, I visualize my match ahead of time and practice in my head what I want to do in the match."

Madison Knudsen (19 years old)

started TKD at age 6

first competition at age 10 (black belt)

"My favorite part about participating in tournaments is learning how I can improve on my techniques. I see other people who are better than I am and I learn from watching. It also gives me the motivation to keep practicing."
